Japan Blue
Blue dyeing has long been a part of life in Japan.
Its deep, fade-resistant tone is well-known overseas as “Japan Blue”.

A traditional technique producing natural dye
Natural indigo lye fermentation is a traditional technique producing dye using only materials taken from the natural world.

Checking quality with all five senses
The condition of the dye changes by the moment. So every day, the makers use all five of their senses to check qualities like temperature, consistency and taste.

A depth of colour chemistry can’t imitate
Using chemical materials, you can dye things quickly and cheaply. But we have two reasons for preferring natural indigo lye fermentation. The first is a desire to use the deep tone of natural dye, which synthetic materials cannot recreate.

Kindness, to people and the environment
The second reason is a desire to be kind to people, and the environment. We can work using our bare hands, and return the dye to the fields when we’re finished - that’s how you know it’s 100% natural.

Insects steer clear
Indigo has insect-repellent properties. That’s why Japan has a custom of wrapping important objects in indigo cloths.

A unique object, only for you
We can hand-dye items on a to-order, one-off basis. Because they’re done individually, the pattern is always subtly different. Each item is a Made In Japan original; the only one in the world, made just for you.
